Portfolios

I am very sick today and I am having trouble breathing with pain in my right lung, so since all I can do is sit I decided to work on my portfolios while my husbands fixes our new van (the old one died). I have 4 portfolios to do this year and I got most of my samples placed in a 3ring binder. Now I need to type the books, curriculum lists, etc. The nice thing about doing unit studies is for the most part I just copy the lists and change or add to it when necessary.
I am still waiting for Iowa Basic tests to come in from ATI before I meet the evaluator, and I have to type up my lists but for the most part I am done and enjoyed putting the samples in the portfolio.
I also found I like the notebooks verses the lapbooks. I like to just turn in a 3ring binder so the lapbooks are too bulky for samples. The nice thing about the bound notebooks is I can easily use the binding machine to open up the binds if I need a samples for my portfolio. Then I can easily put them back. I plan to finish the portfolios in the next few days. The school year is winding down and then its time to begin preparing for the next one. I have enjoyed the Wisdom Booklets. They are truly Deut. 6:4-9

WB 24 History Resource 2 & Nazca / Olmecs

Today we finished up the History resource looking at Ancient Greece & Rome. I enjoyed looking at how the Ancient Rome culture began to the fall was excellent and just encourages me to make a difference for Christ and the importance of the family which is under attack in this modern age.
I then read aloud from the Story of the World looking at more people of the Americas, the Nazcas & Olmecs.
Then we watched two movies one from Netflix-Mayans & Aztecs and from the Moody Science Classics-Empty Cities.
This ends our study on the Mayans, Aztecs, & Inca study along with the History Resource. Next week we will do the science resource. I can't wait! I hope it does not rain so we can do some outdoor survival skills :O)

WB 24 History Resource 2 & Mayan,Aztec,Incas

We continued in the history resource doing part 2 the Mayan Civilization. We then did a review by comparing them, a timeline, vocabulary words, and a map. We then decorated the cover with the extra pictures that came with the Hands of a Child lapbook.
Here is a picture of a part of the accordion lapbook. They are all taped together and fold up into an accordion. The nice thing is I can easily add more lapbooks or extensions within the lapbooks.

I am lifting up the flap so you can see how the cover lifts up and underneath is the lapbook full of mini-books on that topic. This is the Aztec lapbook with just mini-books of the Aztec civilization.

WB 24 History Resource~Incas

Today we did the History Resource Part 2.How does the fall of great civilizations emphasize the Importance of fleeing lust? The resource is really geared for the older student and its not a topic to discuss with younger children since it discusses human sacrifice etc.. The little people text was great for them. We read part 1.The Incas which ended up being perfect since we did the Inca mini-books for our project today :O)

Since these mini-booklets swing open I made little holders to hold them neatly in the lapbook.

WB 24 History Resource 1 & Aztecs

Today we did the History Resource Part 1. How does a person's morality dictate his theology and his philosophy? We looked at the lives of the Greek philosophers Socrates, Plato, & Aristotle. We looked at philosophy and also studied how Neitzsche's immorality influence Nazi ideology.
We then studied the Aztecs and did the mini-booklets. Here are the three covers made using the Aztec design coloring book we purchased from Hands of a Child when we ordered our lapbook.I use the printed book with CD verses the ebooks since they are so much easier for me to use so I purchased the coloring book at the same time.

WB 24 Power Through Precision & Mayans

First we did the Power Through Precision. Our vocabulary words that we did a further study (etymology, synonyms, & antonyms) were:
  • lust
  • appetite
  • fantasy
  • wish
  • desire
  • aspire
  • covet
  • admire
  • infatuated
  • obsessed

We looked at the Biblical example of lust in Samson & Amnon. We plan to memorize Job 31:1 I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

We then began our project study of Mayans, Aztecs, & Incas using Hands of a Child.

Joe likes to draw. I like when they add their personal artwork to the covers. I printed out pictures from the Internet as we went to decorate the lapbook & covers.

Instead of using the traditional file folders we made mini~lapbooks out of colored cardstock to create an accordion lapbook.I like the accordion lapbooks because I can connect other lapbooks I decide to do with the other resources. The other advantage is I can group all the mini-booklets
on one subject in one mini-lapbook.Today we did all the Mayan mini-booklets * lesson.

We used the Hands of a Child Mayan, Aztec & Inca lapbook.http://www.handsofachild.com/shop/Mayans-Aztecs-Incas-Project-Pack-P1483.aspx
