WB 20 Ancient Greece

Well we are finishing up our Ancient Greece study.Monday will be our last day then we will move on to World War 1.

Today the younger students made fake bones out of sculpey clay.Angelina wanted to join in.Then we will play the Ancient Greece games Knucklebones.

I suggested a mosaic out of beans but they decided it was to time consuming so they used construction paper.I made this flower out of beans not to impressive.Daniel made a Mosaic today and here is Angelina's history pocket.Dominic did a writing assignment on hunting & fishing in Ancient Greece while Joe wrote on the Ancient Greece coins & market places.
Today we studied: Daily life in Ancient Greece
It was sad to see what they did to babies that were not wanted. It reminds me of China & the abortion in the US.Very sad when comparing to God's people of Ancient Israel were they considered children a blessing.

Pottery Lesson

We went to Sky Mountain Art Studio for a pottery lesson.
working air bubbles out of the clay.

Then Laura gave some demonstration and taught us how to use the potter's wheel. She always gave some analogy's of pottery and Christ.

We each got to use the wheel and made our own pottery.

Nehemiah almost 3 stamped his clay.

While waiting to take their turn they also made something our of clay.Angelo made Greek coins,Dominic made a pinch pot, etc.

Even Daddy & Mommy got a try.
We had wonderful time learning about pottery and fellowship with the Nickel family another homeschooling family.Laura teaches high school art & Max is the older boys self defense teacher at the local homeschool co-op we attend.
Here is Sam with my children he is the youngest of their family.

We studied our Wisdom Booklet Theme song today My Redeemer and then did a mini-booklet.We will now make an attempt to sing the hymn every morning to learn the hymn. Angelina's History Pocket

Everyone made notebooking pages today. We used God & the History of art lessons.Instead of writing in the book we used free notebooking pages from http://www.notebookingpages.com/.

Today we studied:

  • Ancient Greece Art & Pottery

  • Ancient Greece Music

  • Ancient Greece Architecture

WB 20 & 21 Field Trip Goldsmith & Meditation WS

Our gift from the goldsmith. This mold was to make a Pittsburgh charm.
WB 21~Meditation mini-booklet. They did a Bible verse study which is what the Med.WS is all about.I love when they do this because it is a skill I want them to have when they are adults.

Instead of doing a worksheet we made a mini-booklet since we are making a lapbook for Wisdom Booklet 21.
We also broke open another Geode today. This was a much better example then the one we cracked opened last week.We also discussed the difference between crystals minerals, & rocks.

Then we went on a field trip to International Jewelry Designs.Jeffrey Kuiros a Master Goldsmith taught us about diamonds & how a goldsmith makes custom pieces. He also gave us a mold sample of a charm that has the city of Pittsburgh on it.We enjoyed learning. One of the workers was a retired school teacher so she also explained some things and was a great help.

Here are samples of coins he made for the Renaissance Fair that is here in Pittsburgh annually.

A mold he made.

The store mascot who we met at the jewelry store.

We had a great day now off to church for messy night.

WB 20 & 21 Ancient Greece & Character Quality

Daniel's work.I really like the Dover Coloring Books. But since it is Ancient Greece some pages like the Olympics need removed ! Angelina completed another History Pocket.

This was Dominic's idea to make the min-booklet like the Greek flag. :)

Well today my father in had a stent placed in his valve.Praise the Lord he is doing well but needs to have another valve done Thursday. The Lords timing we will be studying the human heart this WB.This will help the children understand more what is going on.

Today they did the Character Quality WS on Tolerance. They did the Bible study on this character quality and we made a mini-book since we plan on making a lapbook for this WB.

We then studied Ancient Greece Government.Dominic studied different types of government in Ancient Greece while Joe studied Democracy.Dominic like to make mini-books so that is what he choose to do today .He will then attach this to his scrapbook to learn book when it is completed.
We also finished the Ancient Greece section of our read aloud The Story of the World Volume 1.

WB 20 & 21 Greece,Rocks, Major Concept, & Wisdom Quiz

Daniel made my day by drawing what he learned last week on the dry erase board. He of course looked how to spell each type of rock but he did this on his own after we ate breakfast so I had to take a picture. We continued our study on rocks & Minerals from WB 20.We used our Thinking Tank to do an experiment called Conglomerate Salad to explain how sedimentary rocks are formed.

Dominic was right again :/ I had him add more water which caused the experiment not to work :( Oh well that is science.Besides being right he also had some good ideas for the next time I attempt this.In order to show fossils in a sedimentary rock add a gummy fish to the salad.Of course they would take care of the rest :)

Well it did not form a rock because I added to much water causing it to be to moist. :( Next time!

Daniel's Ancient Greece work for today.

Angelina's History pocket for today. She wrote her own myth along with making an gods & goddesses book.

The boys researched & wrote, Joe studied the Trojan War while Dominic studied Greek Mythology.
We began WB 21 today. We completed the Wisdom Quiz and discussed the Major Concept: Anger Violates Love.I then let them explained to them what we will be studying in this Wisdom Booklet and how it relates to the Major Concept. For part of our life classroom projects they are to look for anger when reading the Bible, in life, watching movies, etc.Since the first week is all Bible for the WB and there are no projects finish up the following WB projects. This accomplishes two things.
  • it keeps us moving in the Wisdom Booklets
  • it allows for further study on whatever we are working on in the last WB .
So after we finished up the Major Concept & Wisdom Quiz for WB 21 we continued our study of Ancient Greece & Rocks/Minerals from WB 20.
Dominic also spent some time online researching colleges & career options so he can pray and get some ideas for when we sit down to plan his highschool years.
