Today we completed our Science resource finishing the project pages with the vocabulary words. I planned to make a model of an atom but I did not get the supplies which I plan to do tomorrow.

WB 23 Science ~* Nuclear Reactions & Civil War

Today we continued the Science Resource 6-10. This was the part of the resource that tied in with our verse & major concept.
They learned the danger and immediate attention a nuclear power plant needs with any signs of a change and the need to respond ASAP before a nuclear reaction occurs.
We then used this as a analogy to agreeing quickly with thine adversary. Jesus taught in parables so I love learning about science and history as a tool to teach spiritual truths which is why I love the Wisdom Booklets. I pray they are wise and have the wisdom in life's situations (character focus) and deal with any problems or responsibilities right away. Agreeing quickly requires wisdom & humility.

Then we continued our Civil War study doing lesson 12 in the Civil War Time Travelers series focusing on the battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg.
We plan to take a field trip to Gettysburg & watch the movie this weekend.
Today we learned about and made Civil War Corps Badges. Daniel's is on the right. He placed his badges in his notebook and drew a picture of a union soldier.

WB 23 Science ~* Nuclear Reactions & Civil War

Today we did the Science resource. We will break it down into three parts. We did the first part today reading sections 1-5. Our study is nuclear reactions, atoms, and nuclear reactors. Our demonstration from the WB to introduce the scientific principle of a chain reaction.
We placed wooden matches in homemade playdoh Job made at the co-op.

We then continued our Civil War study. Since we are not making a lapbook with the Time Travelors Civil War study so they placed the haversack on the notebooking page. They placed some of the items in the pouch & taped the others on the notebooking page. Underneath each object it explains why the soldiers would carry these items along with supplies they needed to carry.
Since my husband loves the Civil War he took over the read aloud lessons. He did lesson 11 the battle of Fredericksburg & Chancellorsville . So we now are waiting until he come home then we will write in the newspaper & do the projects the next day.You must be very flexible as a homeschool mom. Building a strong close family is important so I love when Dad jumps in with teaching or doing a project.
He also stopped at the bargain book store on the way home from work. He purchased two awesome living Civil War books. I am so excited because using living books with any study makes it come to life. These two books only cost $10 each!!! They are large full of pictures, colorful, and tons of great information. They truly are a bargain!! I am not sure if there are bargain bookstores all over the country but we will be back for more :O)

The Great Battles of the Civil War is great. It has a map of the battle along with pictures & illustrations numbered with what may have happened there at the bridge etc. What we did was while my husband read they looked at the map & battle scene. It made the lesson come to life. It also has the Generals pictures who lead that battle with information. It is a very cool book!
The Commanders of the Civil War was a great find too. It has tons of pictures & information. They compliment each other very well since they have different type of information. You can't tell by the picture but they are large in size so the pictures are easy to see and some pictures are like a small poster.

To the left is a picture of the battle book.
Below is the other book Commanders of the Civil War.

I just love living books. They will be on the school table to catch kids :O)

Joe finished Amos Fortune Freeman by Elizabeth Yates today.

WB 23 History Resource~English Debtor's Prisons

Today we did the History Resource. Our focus was the English debtors prison. We studied the terrible conditions and how a man who loved God saw the conditions and made a difference.
In 1733, James Oglethorpe established a colony in the U.S. for imprisoned debtors. Not only did he establish the colony but urged men of God like the famous John & Charles Wesley to come to Georgia whose father at one time was in a debtors prison. Did you know Georgia originally was a slave free colony and the Georgia flag was used in the Civil War!
It is so important that our children do not loose sight of the great things God has done through His children and how these great men have made a difference as salt of the earth. Another great hero of the faith!
There is a great short story of him in the book In God We Trust by Timothy Crater & Ranelda Hunsicker.

We then did a study of Georgia using http://www.notebookingpages.com/ Georgia notebooking pages. The student used an Encyclopedia to research the information. Finally, we continued our study on the Civil War doing lesson 9 studying The Bloodiest Day in American history the Battle of Antietam with the results of 23,000 deaths.
